The Scariest thing on Halloween-Turning in my Research Paper

For my research paper, I wrote about underage female marriages. Although I had heard about this practice before it wasn't until I started doing more research that I realized how widespread this issue is and how many girls are affected by it. I did know that girls were more likely to drop out of school if they were married as a teenager or younger but I did not realize that their children had stunted developmental issues. I want to go into social work and this lead me to want to focus more on women and children and maybe eventually work on international policy to help prevent underage marriage. The theories behind why people continue to force girls into early marriage ties in with many of the theories that I have learned in my Sociology classes. Some strategies that worked for my paper were making sure that I had my thesis complete early on so that I could separate out my ideas into different sections. I also jotted down some quick points that I wanted to hit in each of my sections. Some things that I need to improve on are managing my time and pacing better for writing long papers. I have a hard time writing papers in blocks and so I usually try to write my papers in a day and then go back and add extra information. I think this comes from being used to writing essays for AP classes where it was expected that a paper be written in 30 minutes. This writing style has also given me the issue of being able to write shorter papers but struggling to come up with more content for long papers. I still need to figure out a better way so that I can pace myself on long papers and fill it completely with useful information. I hope for my other research papers that I have for classes will go a little more smoothly. Although this was not my favorite assignment, it has allowed me to better assess where I need to work on writing research papers.

  1. This is such an interesting topic for a research paper! So interesting! I got married when I was 21 and my family, not being LDS thought that was so incredibly young and outlandish. I'm assuming your research involved girls younger than that, I'd be interested to read it! You should post it!

  2. That is an interesting topic! Did religion play a role in whether or not women got married at young ages? I'd be curious to know which factors play into underage marriages, if it is mostly cultural, or if it is religious as well/both? I did my paper on why people are choosing to postpone parenthood in this modern age, so kind of a different take on a similar topic. It seems like there are two extremes, either people get married and have kids too early, or too late; and there aren't enough people that have kids in their prime childbearing years (20s). I'd be happy to share some of my research with you if you are interested. Also, what influenced you to go into social work?

  3. Great topic! I feel this is something that not a lot of people know about, I didn't, but it is something that should be shared and talked about. There is definitely a right time to get married and not just for oneself but for a relationship. My dad always told me, "Right time. Right person. Right place." It is great that I was able to choose who, when and where I got married, but it is sad to think that many people to not get that luxury. Thanks for you thought!

  4. I had no idea that younger marriage age was related to developmental issues. I hope to see the end results of the research on here!
